The Van Vigyan Kendra, Chessa was established in the year 1981 by Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE). It is situated at Chessa in the foot hill plains of tropical semi evergreen forests spread over an area of 100 ha.
An area of 100 ha area was developed with systematic layout of various experimental plots, residential and non residential buildings, training facility, green houses, grafting houses, nurseries, guest house etc.
It is known as the Asia’s second largest Bambusetum, and the first in the country with 56 bamboo species. The Arboretum has 186 tree species, medicinal plant garden has 160 species, Ethno botanical plants has 74 species, wild edible plants garden has 33 species, piper garden has 9 species, Canetum has 10 variety of canes, Mussa garden has 12 banana species, Palmatum has 15 variety of palms.
