The Tale Wildlife Sanctuary derived its name from “Tale”, a variety of wild onion
(Allium hookeri) which is abundant at Tale Valley situated within the Sanctuary. It
is
located 10 km North-East of Hapoli town, the District HQ, in Lower Subansiri
District.

Pange, the Range HQ of Tale WLS is connected by a fair-weather road of 15 km from
Hapoli
which is open during winters to light vehicles only. The nearest Railhead is
Naharlagun
located 120 kilometers from Hapoli. The nearest major Airports are Hollongi,
Lilabari
and Dibrugarh.
The area of sanctuary is 337 Sq.km lies roughly in between the Subansiri, Sipu and
Pange
rivers surrounded by densely forested mountains ranging for 2,000 to 4,000m
altitude. It
has undisturbed pristine climax vegetation which is the home of rare, elusive and
graceful clouded leopard. The breath-taking scenario of the pristine and primeval
mountain wilderness is really unique of this Protected Area. Major wildlife includes
Indian elephant, Flying squirrel, Giant squirrel, Himalayan black bear, Indian
porcupine, Indian pangolin, Jungle cat, Leopard, Leopard cat, Clouded leopard, Palm
civet, Wild boar, Slow loris, Tiger, Wild dog, Other, Wild buffalo, Gaur among
others.
The Tale WLS is paradise for ornithologists and butterfly enthusiasts. It is also
home
to some of the rare and unique orchid species in the State while some are endemic to
this area. Presently there is a sizeable number of tourists visiting Tale Wildlife
Sanctuary mostly for bird and butterfly watching. The scope of ecotourism is vast
and
can specialize in cultural-ecotourism aspect, which calls for a proper and
scientific
planning with a proper support for marketing. An orchid trail has been developed at
Pange which is also attracting a large number of orchid enthusiasts.
