The Mehao wildlife sanctuary is named after its beautiful and mesmerizing ‘Mehao
Lake’ situated in core zone of the sanctuary. The Mehao Wildlife Sanctuary can be
approached by road from Tinsukia town (Assam) which leads to Sadiya Sub-division via
NH-115 and
entry point into Arunachal Pradesh at Shantipur Police check-gate which is 25kms
from Roing. It is also connected with Lohit district of Arunachal Pradesh via NH-13
and
East Siang district via NH-13. The nearest airport is located at Tezu and Pasighat
which
is at a distance of 68kms and 110kms from Roing town respectively.
The rich and diverse fauna of the Mehao Wildlife Sanctuary is inclusive of two
hundred
species of birds, thirteen snake species, 232 species of butterfly, and six fish
species. The Mehao Wildlife Sanctuary is home to around sixty species of mammals and
several other animal species. Clouded leopard (Neofelis nebulosa), marbled cat
(Pardofelis marmorata), wild dog (Cuonal pinus), spotted linsang (Prionodon
pardicolor),
Himalayan Black Bear (Selenarctos thibetanus) and Red Panda (Ailurus fulgens) are
some
of the prominent species found in the sanctuary.
Apart from Faunal diversity, sanctuary also hold floral diversity such as Terminalia
myriocarpa, Altingiaexcelsa, several Albizzia species, Duabanga grandiflora,
Dillenia
indica, Mesua ferrea, Phyllostachys bambusoides, Dendrocalamus giganteus and Bambusa
pallida. At the highest point of the sanctuary, one can spot medicinal plants like
Mishmi Teeta (Coptisteeta). The best time to plan a visit to Mehao Wildlife
Sanctuary
will be during the winter season i.e., between October and March.
